MOS Burger
Mountain, Ocean, Sun - The initial letters of these three words make up the name of this Japanese Burger chain and are intended to communicate the ideology and atmosphere of the stores. MOS burger was started in 1972 by Mr. Satoshi Sakurada in Tokyo and has grown into a multi-national fast food chain that has more than 1500 restaurants in Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong and Thailand. According to an article in Flak Magazine, Mr. Sakurada worked in Los Angeles in the early 1970’s and was inspired by a local burger shop. He returned home with the idea to start his own burger restaurant in Japan. He reformed the idea to give it Japanese flavor and culture and from those roots grew the publicly traded MOS Burger, which is the second largest fast food chain in Japan, second only to McDonald’s.
Blackboards greet customers at the entrance of MOS Burger restaurants, upon which the names of the farmers who grew the vegetables and the region where the vegetables were grown are posted for the customers to see. This extra touch probably gives the customers a higher level of trust in the quality of the food they are eating, reminiscent of the effect locally and organically grown foods have on most Americans. A meal at MOS Burger may consist of a Teriyaki burger, a MOS Chicken or a MOS Rice Burger, fries or a salad, and a drink. The average meal costs less than 700 yen or $5.85.

I’ve eaten at MOS Burger in Taipei on multiple occasions and found their food to be fresh and quite tasty. They really feel like an upscale fast-food restaurant with rice-based buns and smaller portion sizes.
